this week for the first time in 28 years The 64-year-old Pontecor-vo was granted a visa by the Italian Foreign Ministry to attend a scientific conference in Rome Thursday honoring another eminent Italian nuclear physicist Eduardo Amaldi Pontecorvjo was chief scientific officer at the British atomic research station at Harwell when he was granted leave to visit Italy in the summer of 1950 He disappeared along with his wife and three children and later turned up in Moscow He was a British citizen at the time and the British government stripped him of After World War II he joined the Harwell laboratory in England in 1948 During his years in Canada he was an associate of Dr Allan Nunn May who was later convicted of passing defense information to the Soviets In Britain he was an associate of Dr Klaus Fuchs who was Convicted on similar charges Pontecorvo won a Stalin Prize in 1954 a Lenin Prize in 1963 and was made a full member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences In the middle 1960s the Soviets built Pontecorvo a $28million laboratory at the Soviet nuclear research center at Dubna 50 miles north of Moscow for his studies in high energy physics Pontecorvo has been a member dormitories Tuesday while officials searched for weapons and questioned each prisoner alone about a Dlabor Day weekend riot William Whyte superintendent of the Hut-tonsville Correctional Center said prisoners smashed windows tables and chairs and set fires in 10 of 12 dormitories in a 16-hour riot Sunday and Monday No one was injured and there were no escapes but Whyte estimated damage at $200000 most of it breakage Fire damage was minor He estimated that 200 of the 378 prisoners participated On Tuesday more than 100 guards nearly three times the normal complement of 35 were heavily armed as
