Protecting your brain isn't about adding "superfoods" to your diet—it's about subtracting foods that jeopardize brain health. Dr. Rangan Chatterjee and I discuss the top 5 foods I recommend avoiding if you are seeking optimal mental health—and 2 of them are stirring up quite a bit of controversy in the comments section. What do you think of this list?

Addition or subtraction? There is nothing you can add to an unhealthy diet to make it healthy. And since metabolic dysfunction is fuelled by what you eat, the answer is to eliminate all the foods which cause issues, especially ultraprocessed products and, if necessary, specific food groups, until you find what works for you.The perception is that this is "restrictive", which is technically correct, but misleading. In fact, the reduction in foods and other substances can be the most liberating thing you could ever do.Eat real food, prepared from fresh, whole, single ingredients. Use intermittent fasting, to give your body time to repair itself. Ensure you get enough deep sleep. Manage stress and get some regular, gentle exercise. Then observe what happens to your mind and body, and decide for yourself whether you are missing out on "vital nutrients".

I want all psychiatric treatment centers to at least offer clients the ketogenic diet (especially inpatient). It is a missed opportunity to address what amounts to chronic metabolic trauma. It is disheartening to watch what we feed people in hospitals (and schools).

i have just launched an online Mind & Body Transformation Challenge to inspire people to understand what they put in/on their bodies and in their minds, the impact and how to implement change. Popularising Nutrient-rich, naturally low-carb unprocessed food, coupled with healthier lifestyle choices is how we reverse this global humanitarian ill-health crisis❤️🩹

Yes!! As a former math teacher and current autoimmune nutrition coach, I love that you are clarifying for everyone that unless you subtract harmful triggers, it does not matter what “healthy” foods you add because your body is in a state of chronic inflammation!

Every vaccination in the history of vaccinations is unnecessary, weakens health and harms people (Dr Raymond Obomsawin - 10 years ago). Look at the obvious evidence. Humans have existed healthily and much stronger and fitter for millennia without pharmaceuticals. Consider deaths in childbirth which reduce the average age of death, which create the myth that we live longer nowadays. We do not. And our brains have shrunk. Look at Dr Ken Berry and Dr Bill Schindler's recent discussion on carnivore diet. Also, consider terrain theory vs germ theory. 'Viruses' is a very questionable concept. Energy healing and homeopathy are healthy and actually free, except for the practitioner inputs/info. We are all healers when we realise it. We have been in a biowar for many decades, perhaps millennia. Evil vs Love. Lies vs truth. Love and truth win. Time is now. You choose. Let go and learn, or stay in denial and become increasing ill and dependent on the psychopathic killing machine. We have a pretty low bar when it comes to our mental and physical health. We've come to think of poor mental health as almost normal now, and that's not our birthright. Robust mental and physical health should be the goal, and eating right can help you get there. 🧠Really enjoyed chatting about this with Dr. Josef Witt-Doerring. Thanks for having me!

This new podcast conversation is unique and one of my favorites because it was hosted by fellow psychiatrist, Carlene MacMillan, MD, who interviews me together with cardiologist Bret Scher MD, director of Metabolic Mind about the exciting new field of metabolic psychiatry. This is a particularly good podcast to listen to if you are a mental health practitioner because Dr. MacMillan adds valuable context, skillfully and efficiently steering the discussion into areas of most interest and relevance to clinical practice.
