You can serve this dish with a side salad, Texas toast, arugula salad with cherry tomatoes, or my easy cheesy garlic breadstick recipe (which can be found below). This dish is much easier to make than lasagna which requires a bunch of layering.

  • Lean ground beef or 99% fat-free turkey - Is considered better than higher fat options for several reasons. First, it has less saturated fat, which can contribute to heart disease and other health issues. Additionally, it tends to have fewer calories per serving, making it a good option for those watching their weight. The 96% lean ground beef from Aldi is my favorite. Sometimes I use a split between ground beef and Italian Sausge.
  • Marinara sauce (or 3 cups homemade) - Store-bought jarred marinara sauce is convenient to have at home for a quick meal like this lasagna pasta. My favorite marinara sauce is always Rao’s because it has all clean ingredients on the back of the ingredients list
  • Garlic powder - Is made from dehydrated garlic cloves and like the chili powder above it gets pulverized into a powder or flour consistency.
  • Italian seasoning - Is a popular blend of herbs and spices that typically includes a mix of dried basil, oregano, rosemary, thyme, and sometimes garlic powder or dried red pepper flakes.
  • Crushed red pepper - are small pieces of dried hot peppers, typically made from cayenne, that are crushed or ground into small flakes.
  • Part-skim mozzarella cheese - Reduced-Fat Cheese has a lower calorie count and less saturated fat than regular cheese, but it may also have a different taste and texture. It also helps with keeping the calorie count pretty low for this recipe.
  • Sour cream or Plain Greek yogurt can be used instead of sour cream as well.

Variations to Try

  • This Lasagna Pasta Recipe calls for ground beef or Italian sausage. I love Italian sausage with this but other types of protein work as well. You can sub ground chicken or ground turkey to lower the points for the dish.
  • Store bought marinara sauce is high in points because of added sugar or olive oil. Make your own zero point marinara. I posted this recipe back in 2014 and back then there were no zero point marinara sauce recipes. I've recently developed my own recipe for Basic Marinara Sauce.
  • If you make this recipe with 93% lean ground beef, plain greek yogurt, and homemade marinara sauce the smart points would be 10 per serving.
  • If you make this recipe with 99% lean ground turkey, plain greek yogurt, and homemade marinara sauce the smart points would be 7 per serving.
  • As you can see there are many different ways you can make this!

What to serve with Lasagna Pasta

Lasagna is a delicious and hearty meal that can be enjoyed on its own or paired with other dishes. If you're looking to serve something alongside your lasagna, here are some great options to consider:

  1. Air Fryer Garlic bread: This classic Italian side dish is a perfect complement to lasagna. It's easy to make and can be served warm and crispy.
  2. Salad: A fresh salad can help cut through the richness of the lasagna. Just a bag of Ceasar salad from the store is fine.
  3. Roasted vegetables: Roasting vegetables such as zucchini, eggplant, and bell peppers can add a great depth of flavor to your meal.
  4. My recipe for Easy Cheesy Garlic Bread Sticks are a popular Italian side dish that can be served alongside lasagna.
  5. Antipasto platter: If you're looking to serve a variety of dishes, consider putting together an antipasto platter with cured meats, cheeses, olives, and other small bites.

Yes, it doesn't have to be Greek Yogurt. Can also use sour cream.

  2. Mm says

Could I use plain whole milk yogurt or does it have to be Greek Yogurt?

  3. Bella says

Can I substitute ricotta for mozzarella?

  4. Jenna says

I've reheated pasta in the air fryer before. 350 for about 5 minutes in one of those tinfoil pans or oven-proof dishes. Comes out pretty well and almost tasted like the original.

  5. Charlotte says

Delicious! What is the best way to reheat leftovers though?

  6. Amanda says

Made this dairy-free today with these subs, in case anyone (like me) reads reviews to see if it might work!

Sub Kite Hill ricotta for mozzarella
Sub Kite Hill sour cream for sour cream (I think any df sour cream or df plain greek yogurt would work well here though! I just had this on-hand.)

I used .5 lb italian sausage and .5 lb ground beef. It's AMAZING! Thank you!

FAQs

What to add to lasagna to make it taste better? ›

Chopped fresh rosemary, thyme, or sage would all be delicious in addition to the basil in this homemade lasagna. Add more cheese: If you like an extra cheesy topping, feel free to double the amount of mozzarella on top. Also, feel free to add in any other cheeses that you love too.

What keeps lasagna from falling apart? ›

The biggest offender, though, is watery, thin pasta sauce. A helpful technique can prevent this pitfall from sabotaging your lasagna: Reduce your sauce to thicken it before pouring it into the casserole. A thin sauce runs right off of cooked lasagna noodles, causing all the layers to slide off of each other, as well.

How many layers of pasta should lasagna have? ›

Let me break it to you: If you want to make a lasagna, three layers just won't cut it! For the perfect lasagna, you need at least 4-5 layers to really enjoy all those mouth-watering flavors. And, here's a pro-tip: make sure to season each layer generously, but not too much. The average lasagna has 8 layers!

Is there a trick to no boil lasagna noodles? ›

Place your dry noodles in the water, making sure they're all equally submerged, and let them soak for about 20 minutes. Let this go while making your sauce or preheating the oven, and it shaves off all the extra time you'd spend boiling them.

Why do you put milk in lasagna? ›

The secret ingredient? Milk. It tenderises the meat, to leave you with the most tender ragù. Use a deep dish and find out how to layer a lasagne.

Do you add egg to ricotta for lasagna? ›

Add egg and parsley: a basic ricotta mixture calls for 16 ounces of whole milk ricotta, one egg, and a couple tablespoons of parsley. For extra creamy ricotta, add in an extra egg, a handful of grated parmesan, and a quarter cup of shredded mozzarella.

Should you bake lasagna covered or not? ›

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 40 minutes. Remove the foil and bake until cheese is golden brown, 5 to 10 more minutes. Remove from the oven and let stand for 10 minutes before cutting and serving.

What should be the last layer of lasagna? ›

Finish off your lasagne either with a layer of tomato-based sauce or with your white sauce – whichever you have left – and then grate over plenty of Parmigiano-Reggiano. A common extra topping is torn mozzarella, which makes a lovely, melted cheesy layer on top.

How do I make my lasagna more solid? ›

Yes it's tempting to cut into the lasagna right when you pull it from the oven, but let it rest on a cooling rack for at least 15 minutes. This will help firm up all the layers and make it much easier to slice a square. And of course you can make it a day ahead or in the morning then reheat.

How do you thicken lasagna filling? ›

You could also use a roux, a cooked mixture of starch and fat (usually flour and butter). It's a highly popular and equally effective thickening agent. To make a roux, melt butter in a pan, add flour, and whisk until it forms a thick golden brown paste. Add it to your tomato sauce and whisk well to prevent clumping.

What cheese to put on top of lasagne? ›

A good lasagna will have cheese on every layer. This is traditionally a ricotta, mozzarella blend. The top layer is usually a blend of mozzarella, Romano, and parmigiano . The sauce is spread over the noodles of each layer and then the cheese mixture.

What should the first layer of lasagna be? ›

Start with Sauce

Whether you're making a vegetable lasagna with tomato sauce or a traditional lasagna with meat sauce, sauce should be the first ingredient that goes in your baking dish. It prevents the pasta from sticking to the pan so that the lasagna is easy to slice and serve. You only need a thin layer.

Should the top layer of lasagna be noodles or sauce? ›

Begin Layering

After the initial sauce layer, add a layer of pasta sheets, ricotta mixture (or bechamel), sauce, and cheese. Then repeat the layers. Top the last layer of your lasagna with sauce and cheese.

How to boil lasagna sheets without breaking? ›

Don't boil them at all! put them in a pan and pour hot water over them (boiling if you like) and let them soak & soften just a few minutes, so you can manipulate them. Make your lasagna like you made it last time, but add some water or chicken broth to the pan. Bake it covered, then finish uncovered as usual.

Do you need to pre-cook dry lasagne sheets? ›

Soak the lasagne sheets in a single layer in boiling water for 5 mins. (Although the packet says no pre-cook, I find soaking improves the texture.) Drain well.

Do oven ready lasagna noodles need to be soaked? ›

While you don't need to cook their no-boil noodles for a traditional layered-up lasagna, they advise, "If you are making lasagna roll-ups, you can boil Barilla® Oven-Ready Lasagna for 3-5 minutes, so the sheets become more pliable and can be easily rolled." Ronzoni recommends that their Oven Ready Lasagna noodles be ...
