What does angel food cake taste like?

Angel food cake is light, fluffy and sweet. Sugar is the main flavor of the cake (almost like a marshmallow!), but we use vanilla extract for a hint of warmth and richness. You can also use almond extract if you prefer.

Can you make angel food cake in a regular pan?

Yes! Although we’ve never used a 9×13 baking pan for an angel food cake, we have made angel food cupcakes and used a loaf pan.

No matter what pan you use, don’t grease the pan.

Do you grease a pan for angel food cake?

NO! This is a big no. The bowl, beater, spatulas and pans must be clear of any grease at all when you are making angel food cake. Grease (in the pan or on utensils) can cause the cake to fall.

How to Make Angel Food Cake

We find it easiest to use a stand mixer for this recipe.

  • Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.
  • Sift together ¾ cup of sugar and the flour three times. Set it aside.
  • In a clean, grease-free bowl, beat the egg whites until they are frothy .
  • Add the salt and cream of tartar, then beat until the eggs hold stiff peaks.
  • Add the remaining sugar, three tablespoons at a time, beating well after each addition.
  • Fold in the flour/sugar mixture about ½ a cup at a time, then fold in the vanilla flavoring and sprinkles.
  • Spoon the batter into anungreased angel food cake tube pan. Don’t use a bundt cake pan. Use a two piece angel food tube pan.
  • Bake on the lowest oven rack for 45 minutes or until the top is lightly browned and looks dry. Don’t underbake the cake.
  • Remove the pan from the oven and immediately invert the pan, standing it upside down on 3 glasses that are equal in height for support.
  • Allow the cake to cool upside down completely.

How long do you leave angel food cake upside down?

You want to leave the angel food cake upside down until it is fully cooled to room temperature.lide a knife around the sides and center of the pan to loosen the cake.

To remove the cake from the pan, slide a knife around the outside of the cake to loosen it, then turn it upside down.

Why did my angel food cake collapse?

There can be several reasons why this happens:

  • You may not have mixed the ingredients well enough. Beat the egg whites until they are frothy, then fold in the flour and sugar and mix until it is well combined. Mix gently though!
  • The pan may have had grease on it. The pan needs to be grease free so that the cake can attach to the pan and rise.
  • You may have underbaked it. You want the top to be cracked and golden brown. Don’t be tempted to take it out too early.

**Pro Tip: We had to test this cake a few times to get it to work properly with the sprinkles. If you are adding ingredients to an angel food cake (such as sprinkles), if you add too much, it could cause the cake to become heavy and fall. We found that ½ cup of sprinkles was good, but ¾ was too much. If you are adding nuts or other ingredients, you may need to do some testing to find the right amount.**

How to Store Angel Food Cake

Angel food cake is safe to store at room temperature for about 3 days. If you want to keep it longer, store it in the refrigerator.

Either way you store it, make sure you cover the cake well because it will dry out quickly.

Tools Needed to Make Angel Food Cake

  • Stand Mixer: A hand mixer will work, but I always find it easier to froth eggs with a stand mixer.
  • Angel Food Cake Tube Pan: I find that traditional aluminum pans work best.
  • Flour Sifter: Because you should always take the extra step to sift flour for excellent results.

FAQs

What is the secret to angel food cake? ›

Egg Whites: The star of the show! They provide all of the leavening for angel food cake. Using only whites (no yolks) gives this cake a super light texture. Be sure to use only fresh eggs; liquid egg whites in a carton have been pasteurized, which can prevent them from whipping into stiff peaks.

Can you bake a regular cake in an angel food pan? ›

While you can use a regular cake recipe in an angel food cake pan, it's important to note that the pan is specifically designed for light and airy batters.

How do you keep angel food cake from deflating? ›

Every angel food cake has to be cooled upside down in the pan. Why? Until the cake is completely cooled, its spongy structure hasn't set. Flipping it upside down makes sure it doesn't collapse during that process.

Why do diabetics eat angel food cake? ›

As stated previously, Angel Food Cakes are great for people with diabetes because they are low in sugar compared to most other cakes, and especially low in simple sugars and carbohydrates.

What happens if you don t turn angel food cake upside down? ›

As it bakes, it clings to the sides of the pan and gets as tall if not a little taller than the pan. As it cools it could deflate if left in the baking position so it has to cool in the pan, upside down. Some angel food pans have little feet that stick up, usually three of them, so you don't need a small bottle.

Can you put parchment paper on bottom of angel food cake pan? ›

This recipe can be made in a classic angel food cake pan or in standard-size muffin tins/pans with paper cup liners. If the angel food cake pan used does not have a removable bottom, line the bottom of the pan with parchment paper. In either case, do not grease the pan or the parchment paper liner.

Can I use a Bundt pan instead of a tube pan for angel food cake? ›

Recipes that specifically call for a tube pan and use whipped egg whites for a light and fluffy batter should not be baked in a Bundt pan. The cake may not rise properly, and an airy angel food or chiffon cake will stick in the intricate crevices of the pan, resulting in a messy-looking cake when you remove it.

What is in a box of angel food cake mix? ›

Ingredients. Sugar, Wheat Flour Bleached, Egg White, Corn Starch, Baking Soda, Citric Acid, Enzyme Modified Soy Protein, Calcium Phosphate, Salt, Cellulose Gum, Artificial Flavor, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (a whipping aid). Contains Wheat, Egg And Soy Ingredients.

Why didn t my boxed angel food cake rise? ›

A small bit of moisture or egg yolk mixed in with the egg whites, a particularly humid day, or repeatedly opening your oven can also cause the cake to not rise. Over-mixing the batter once you've added the flour is another likely culprit, mix until just combined.

Can I use milk instead of water for angel food cake mix? ›

1) Use the same quantity of milk as water called for in the recipe. 2) You may replace the milk with buttermilk to give your cake an additional rich flavor. Use a few additional tablespoons of buttermilk than the recipe calls for because it's very thick.

Why can't you use a plastic bowl for angel food cake? ›

Use only metal or glass mixing bowls when making Angel Food Cake. Plastic or ceramic bowls retain oils which will disturb the rising process. When beating egg whites try not to under beat or over beat; egg whites should be stiff but not dry.

Why does my angel food cake taste sour? ›

It's possible that the cake went bad and that's why it tasted sour. When perishable food items like cake are left at room temperature for too long, they can become contaminated with harmful bacteria that can cause food poisoning. These bacteria can produce acid, which can cause the sour taste that you experienced.

Why does angel food cake need a hole in the middle? ›

The hole in the middle of the pan allows the hot air to circulate and reach the center of the cake. Unlike most cakes that are simply placed on a wire rack to cool, Angel Food Cakes are immediately inverted so the baked cake will maintain its volume and to keep it from shrinking as it cools.

Why don't you grease the pan for angel food cake? ›

Do not grease the angel food cake tube pan (one in which the center tube is higher than the walls of pan and the bottom is removable.) You want the batter to cling to the side while it is rising. A greased pan will not allow the batter to rise.

Why do you cook angel food cake upside down? ›

According to Cooking for Engineers, the cake could collapse under its own weight, which is most definitely not the heavenly reward you're aiming for. Turning your freshly baked angel food cake upside down while it cools ensures it will stay light and fluffy, with the heavenly, airy texture you desire.

Why is an angel food cake light and fluffy? ›

Angel food cake is one-of-a-kind, and no other cake recipe matches its super fluffy, airy texture. Though it's a type of sponge cake, it differs from other popular recipes because it's traditionally made using no butter or oil in the batter. Instead, beaten egg whites are the secret to its ultra-light texture.
