Everything you need to know about Sweet Magnolias season 4 (2024)

Yes, Sweet Magnolias has been renewed for season four.

The heartwarming drama about lifelong friendships and romance announced the good news in October 2023, but fans shouldn't be too quick to celebrate as it appears as though the next instalment isn't due to arrive in 2024.

So when can viewers expect their favourite show to return? And what's going to happen in the next batch of episodes?

Here's everything we know about Sweet Magnolias season four on Netflix.

Yes, we'll certainly be getting another instalment of the hit Netflix show, as the streaming giant has officially confirmed that Sweet Magnolias will be back for season four.

However, there was some sad news to come along with that – the announcement was followed up with confirmation that it would be among a list of shows not scheduled to be released in 2024 (according to Deadline). So you'll be waiting a while for that release date, folks.

Sweet Magnolias join the likes of The Lincoln Lawyer season three, Ginny and Georgia season three and XO, Kitty season two – all follow-ups that will also not be back this year.

That being said, filming for the show got under way in January 2024, with the announcement also including the first on-set picture of the season.

JoAnna Garcia Swisher, who plays Maddie Townsend in the series, has also confirmed via Instagram that filming for the upcoming season has now finished. So we're one step closer...

"That's a wrap on Season 4!" she wrote, alongside a smiling picture taken with her co-stars Brooke Elliott and Heather Headley.

Thankfully the show doesn't require extensive SFX, so the post-production should hopefully be speedy enough for us to expect an early 2025 release date. Here's hoping!

Sweet Magnolias just wouldn't be Sweet Magnolias without the three women who star at the heart of this show.

So, of course, it's safe to assume that JoAnna Garcia Swisher (Maddie Townsend), Brooke Elliot (Dana Sue Sullivan) and Heather Headley (Helen Decatur) will all return for a fourth season.

Aside from that central trio though, any member of the cast could technically return or drop out, as proved by Bianca Berry Tarantino's departure from the role of Katie Townsend ahead of season three.

Due to scheduling conflicts, she was replaced by Ella Grace Helton, who will likely continue the role into season four.

Sweet Magnolias author Sherryl Woods thinks there's plenty of potential storylines to fill a fourth season – and possibly even beyond.

"There are many storylines that leave room for discussion – Cal and Maddie, Helen and Erik, Noreen and Jeremy, and Bill and Kathy, to name a few," Woods told Parade.

"There are so many things that could be done and there are so many things [where you think], Wait, what happens next in this? And you always hope that people are wanting more and wanting the next stage of things.

"I don't think we've explored the older generation, Paula's generation, in any depth yet. But then also the teens have very relatable stories, too."

Here's an official summary of how the third chapter played out: "Following the brawl at Sullivan's, Maddie wrestles with the best way to help Cal and works to clear her own emotional path. Helen faces difficult decisions about the men in her life. And Dana Sue searches for a way to use Miss Frances' check to help the community, without upending her family.

"The identity of the tire slasher sends shockwaves through Serenity, the recall causes unexpected consequences, and there are romantic surprises in every generation. Throughout the season, the ladies tackle these problems – and all the complications they cause – with their trademark warmth, humour, and devotion to each other and those they love. And margaritas."

If we can guarantee one thing about the plot of season four, it's that margaritas will be heavily involved. Again. And also, meddling.

"I don't want to say I'm a meddler," Garcia Swisher told Scary Mommy. "But when I see people that are struggling around me, I really lean in and want to kind of fix things. And so, for me, I didn't think Maddie was overstepping on any level.

"The idea that she had to eat crow and learn from it was definitely a learning experience for me where I was holding space for someone not always trying to fix things. I think that she really learned that."

Garcia Swisher added: "I think this year Maddie's going to have another moment of how to dodge the bullets or juggle things, and it's going to be a really exciting year for her from what I understand."

There isn't a trailer for Sweet Magnolias season four just yet, as it's too early for any footage.
