CARDIGAN ───── luke castellan - i. PROLOGUE - Page 2 (2024)

Her eyes, like the constellations she'd dream about at night, danced brightly as they searched the area for anything and everything.

Aurelia is a curious, young child with a heart of gold to match with it. With the girl being barely eleven years of age, has experienced much for such a young child.

"Why are you up here, all alone?" A small but booming voice questions standing next to her.
Aurelia turns her head unsure of how to answer the question. Her eyes meet the gaze of a young boy.

The boy is tall and skinny, Aurelia watches the way his black eyebrows furrow upwards, the way his shoulders rise and fall as he stands, the place where his dark curls meet up against the top of his ears, and the scar along the side of his face. His features swirl her mind lightning fast, as if she couldn't get enough of taking the young boy in.

"It's peaceful up here," she answers softly before patting the spot next to her, "would you like to sit?"

The boy grew startled for a moment, as though he had not expected the brown-haired girl to invite him to sit. But nevertheless, he sits beside her, blinking.

"Why do you think it's peaceful?" He asks.

Beneath their feet, a group of wildflowers, flowing wildly like sparks in a fire, as a breeze blows through the air. The boy quickly plucks one from the bunch, gripping it like it would melt if he didn't, and begins to pluck the petals from it.

"No!" Aurelia asserts. "You'll hurt it! You wouldn't like it if someone did that to you, now would you?"

"I'm sorry," The boy quickly admits back, ashamed.

But soon, the shame turns into laughter as he begins to chuckle. Aurelia is rather confused as her eyes begin to widen.

"I didn't know flowers had feelings," The boy says as the laughter diminishes and turns into calming silence.

"Yes, they do," Aurelia remarks back gently.

"But I'm sure they'll be alright."

"What's your name?" The boy asks, looking deeply in her eyes.

Aurelia had never had someone look at her like the way the boy is. She looks back at him with the same expression, a smile gracing her soft lips.

"I'm Aurelia." She lets out.

"I'm Luke." He says back.

"It's nice to meet you, Luke." She breathes out.

The boy, Luke, only nods before he turns his head back to the battlefield. The game had ended long ago, so only the silence, the trees, the wind, and them were left there.

Aurelia notices the boy's silence, but she only smiles because she was too happy to question it. Too happy to question the untroubling silence, he brought. Too happy to question how it makes her feel.

"How'd you get your scar?" Aurelia questions, her curiosity getting the best of her, as it always did.

"On my way to camp." Luke says simply. As if it were the most causal thing on Earth.

Aurelia rolls her eyes slightly, "You say it as if it is so simple to get such a lasting scar on your face."

Luke smiles, "To me it is. I did it to protect my family."

"So, it is more of an honor scar than a sad one?"

Aurelia implores. "I believe it is rather admirable, Luke."

"Why thank you, Aurelia." Luke teases.

"No problemo," She chuckles. "You know, you're the first person to talk to me since I got here."

Luke turns to her incredulously, "How can someone not want to talk to you?"

Aurelia merely shrugs as the wind begins to pick up again. Luke grabs her hand and begins to tug her.

"Where are we going?" Aurelia asks curiously.

"Somewhere fun," Luke replies back.

The images of the rock are long forgotten once they get to the main section of camp. The cabins roll pasts, here the trees there the fields of grass and so many other things Aurelia wonders about, here the lake and there the group of Ares children practicing so hard she wonders how they do it, here the mess hall there Chiron, the centaur who had shown her an abundance of kindness her first few days at camp.

She waves at him as Luke continues to tug her on, Chiron only winks at her as if it was to tell her some super secret thing, she had no clue about.

Luke takes her past the edge of camp, the farthest she has ever gone before arriving here, they pass over sign after sign of warning, the ground shaking under them as if they had just passed the threshold. Aurelia holds her breath, expecting to feel a rope or something draw tight inside her and pull her back.

But instead she feels nothing, only the warmth of Luke's hand in hers. They walk for another ten minutes before Aurelia hears the faint noise of water.

It's a waterfall, with flowing vibrant water with so many colors Aurelia wonders how they got there. It's peaceful, adventurous, like a room filled with windows all thrown in wide, eager to let in breaths of fresh air, the sunlight, the spring.

"It's beautiful," she lets out, a sigh leaving her lips.

Luke swirls around to meet her gaze, "I know."

Luke leads her to a fresh patch of grass, and sits her down. Aurelia's mind wheels with questions that make her head spin.

"I come here to think," Luke answers almost immediately knowing the questions the young girl must have.

She only nods, not willing to break another deathing silence between them. For the rest of the day, the pair spends their day there, neither one of them willing to leave.
